2016 Winter Project

Happy New Year, everyone!! We hope everyone had a great Christmas and holiday season! Our Board is currently planning 2017, so we will see you again soon for another year of leading kindly!!
Our 2016 Winter Project is in the books and we are so grateful for the opportunity we had to assist women in need this Christmas. In the Fall, our Board decided that our project would involve assisting one of our partner agencies, Downtown Women's Center, in Los Angeles. Downtown Women's Center's mission is to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women. Founded in 1978, the Downtown Women’s Center is the only organization in Los Angeles exclusively dedicated to addressing the needs of women overcoming poverty and homelessness in Skid Row.  We feel so honored to partner with this amazing center that services hundreds of homeless women each day. Thank you to Jay McDonald at Downtown Women's Center for meeting with our founders to make this project happen. We look forward to more opportunities to service DWC.

Our Winter Project consisted of:
  • a donation drive collecting items to create 175 Kindness Kits that would be gifted to homeless women at the center
  • 2016 instagram auction, raising funds to forward PLK's mission and programs and assist our Winter Project
  • December 5th Holiday Kindness Party to prepare kits for DWC
  • December 10th PLK Cooking Club at Downtown Women's Center cooking for nearly 200 women
We took off in the Fall with the donation drive, collecting monetary donations to build 175 Kindness Kits that would be gifted to the women at Downtown Women's Center. We wanted to place gloves, scarves, cards, and encouragement into each bag. We also did our 2016 Instagram auction, in which dozens and dozens of online vendors gave of their time and resources to donate items up for bid. A big thank you to our Online Relations Manager, Raewyn, for spearheading the auction! There were so many amazing items and we are so grateful for the many wonderful vendors who partnered with us to make it happen! We apprecaite you all!

On December 5th, we partnered with My Gym in Valencia and Fit4Mom Santa Clarita to bring our first ever Holiday Kindness Party. Nearly 100 guests of families, children, and volunteers attended and helped color 100 snack pack bags, fill 175 Kindness Kits with gloves, scarves, and cards for women in need at Downtown Women's Center, raised over $1339 for PLK, hung kindness on our kindness tree, and participated in fun MyGym and Fit4Mom activities. We are grateful to all the families who came to teach their little ones that they can lead kindly, no matter what challenges life throws their way. We were so touched seeing all the children & parents participating in service and having fun together! THANK YOU for guiding your little ones towards leading kindly, helping PLK help more women and kids in need, and to everyone who supported this event! Our goal with the Holiday Kindness Party was to forward our mission in helping families and their children (as young as a few months old) to start learning what the holiday season is all about and to be exposed to "leading kindly" even at a young age.
It was wonderful to see so many parents involved in teaching their children and helping them to prepare for our Winter Project with us.

Santa also made an appearance as well to sit with all the kind kids! He always leads kindly, no matter what! ;)
A big thank you to David Yanez and Wise Owl Media group for taking photos at the event! (all Santa photos can be found on our facebook page.)

A huge thank you to the amazing MyGym & Fit4Mom teams for coming together with us to make this event such a fun and great success! Thank you especially to owners, Brittney, from MyGym and Dani, from Fit4Mom, for their kindness in co-hosting this event with us! We love partnering with such kind businesses throughout California!

The Holiday Kindness Party was a success and we had so much fun!Thank you to all who attended!!

On December 10th, Project Lead Kindly and a team of volunteers went to Downtown Women's Center, where we gifted the 175 Kindness Kits and cooked throughout the entire morning for the nearly 200 homeless women at the center that day. Rick, the DWC Cooking Leader, helped our volunteers prepare all the food, from collared greens, to chicken, to yams and salad. We washed, cut, boiled, broiled, and had a blast leading kindly together as a team!

We wanted to send a special thank you to everyone who supported PLK's 2016 Winter Project in any way. Whether you donated, volunteered, loaned us items, helped us with events, shared the Project through social media, participated in our 2016 Instagram auction, or simply sent your support, please know how much we appreciate you. Because of you, we were able to collect Kindness Kit items and provide warm meals to women in need. Because of you, nearly 200 homeless women were assisted this Christmas season. Because of you, families were able to come together and learn to lead kindly together. Because of you, PLK reached hundreds of more people online and in person to bring the Lead Kindly message of hope, service, and kindness.

What we learned from this specific Lead Kindly Project is that when people come together in efforts for good, amazing things happen. Your small acts of kindness reach far and wide to touch people's lives that you may not even realize. We also learned that despite the craziness & challenges that any year can bring (we know a lot of you may have felt that way in 2016), that there is always, always good in the world. There are always good people out there who want to make a positive impact and do some real good. There is always the opportunity to lead kindly.

From our family to yours, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and holiday season and a wonderful 2017 ahead! We hope that you will find ways to lead kindly this year and remember your potential to make a difference, no matter what challenges you face.
